ANNUAL ROUND TABLE ORGANIZED BY SP DENTISTRY AND SP CHEMISTRY ON CARBON NANOMATERIALS

For the second year in a row, SP Dentistry and SP Chemistry are organizing a workshop on carbon nanomaterials. In particular, SP dentistry has successfully participated in several EUREKA and COST projects in this field, because carbon nanotubes as a material are showing certain applications in the reinforcement of dental materials. SP Chemistry supports SP Dentistry by physicochemical characterizations of the materials examined by this study program in medical applications.

This year, a particular topic at the roundtable held on 06.12.2019. were the carbon nanotubes and a contribution was made by Dr. Zoran Ereš from the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, who spoke about contemporary tendencies of carbon nanotube applications. Assistant Professor Suzana Gotovac Atlagić from SP Chemistry, who received her PhD in these materials, also outlined SP Chemistry’s plans in this area. Specifically, in the past year SP, Chemistry has acquired funds for the procurement of cylindrical tube furnace (UNESCO project) and BET nanoporous analyzer (SINERGIJA project), key devices that will enable concrete synthesis and analysis of carbon nanotubes by this Faculty’s laboratories.

Experiments on SP dentistry show that even very small percentages of carbon nanotubes added to polymeric dental materials (polymetamethacrylate) improve the mechanical properties and antimicrobial properties of dental prostheses. Additional research is currently underway to optimize the aesthetic appearance of such materials so that they can be put into real use in the future.

The roundtable was realized through the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology Development, Higher Education and the Information Society through a COST action called „Multi-functional Nano-Carbon Composite Materials Network (MultiComp)“ in which SP dentistry is participating in our Republic.
