The second „RM@schools“ summer school in Bosnia and Herzegovina was held in Konjic on 16 and 17 of July, thanks to the „ESEE Education Initiative“ project (grant 10009) supported by „EIT raw materials“ fund. Organizer was Chemistry Department, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Banja Luka. The place where summer school took place was Konjic since there is a pyrophyllite deposit estimated to 38 million tones near Konjic, in the hamlet Parsovići.
This summer school was supported by the “AD Harbi” company which is undertaking research on pyrophyllite application, mostly in agriculture, but also in the pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, civil engineering, water industry… The company granted access to the pyrophyllite deposit.
The program included the interactive chemistry class, held in the seminar room of the “City Garden” hotel in Konjic. Pupils have learned a lot about the raw materials in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the deposits map showing locations of: iron, bauxite, lead, zinc, salt, bentonite, kaolinite, lime, coal and other deposits. “AD Harbi” company held a short presentation about pyrophyllite showing to the pupils different shapes and products from this mineral, and introducing its main characteristics and potential applications.
Later on, the fieldwork of the program was realized through: visit to the pyrophyllite deposit where the pupils could both observe the deposit and perform few chemical experiments, observe the pyrophyllite structure with field microscopes and visit the research center for agricultural applications of pyrophyllite. In this part of the program, especially vivid were the explanations of the guest expert geologist prof. dr Toni Nikolić, from the Federal Institute for Geology.
The target group of the program were pupils from the 8th and 9th grade of elementary school and, to promote peace and understanding through the science, the care was taken that the pupils were of all three constitutive nationalities from Bosnia and Herzegovina. In total, the summer school was attended by 16 pupils from three schools: “Branko Ćopić” Donji Dubovik, “Mladen Stojanović” Ljubija and “Prva osnovna škola” from Konjic. Also, teachers Anja Kostadinović, Edna Delalić and Omer Kozić were present.
The goal of the „RM@schools“ program is to draw the attention of the pupils at the early age to European raw materials and material sciences in general: chemistry, geology, mining, ecology, technology… This program which is promoted in Europe for the last few years is nourishing future experts in these areas. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, they will work on the economic growth of the country through the exploitation of natural resources, but at the same time by taking care of environmental protection.
