RediNano projectstarting

Thanks to the support of the Ministry for Scientific-technological Development, Higher Education and Information Society, and newly established “Sinergija” fund, Faculty is able to start to begin the activities on the RediNano Project („Rediscovering the Potentials of Old Plants for Dry Distillation of Wood-Exotic Nanocarbons“). Project support was transferred and the public procurement of the equipment is initiated in April 2020, while the experiments will start as soon as the epidemiological situation in the country becomes stable.

The idea for the project was born from the collaboration of Chemistry Department with the “Destilacija” company from Teslić. The preliminary research before the project, have revealed that the briquette coal which this company is producing is covered with the unusual spiral and fibrous carboneous structures. Although the carbon materials such as activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, fullerene, graphene etc., are in the focus of the interest of many research groups in the world, somehow, these structures were dismissed. There is no literature about something similar observed at the charcoal made by dry distillation of the wood. Namely, this production was commercialized a long time ago, so probably there was no need for deeper research. However, in present project, by purchase of the important equipment (BET analyzer), and by collaboration with eminent experts form diaspora and Japan, these structures and their potential applications will be studied in details. Project has a goal of improvements of the nanoporosity of the charcoal and turning it into a more valuable product, that is activated carbon, a widely used filter material. Trials of the new production process will be conducted under high environmental standards, taking a special care on the gasses which will be generated in the process. The best practice will be established thanks to the participation of the Institute for Protection and Ecology of Republic of Srpska, whose state-of-the-art equipment will be used for exhaust gas analysis.

Project will strengthen the long collaboration of the Chemistry Department with the colleagues from Shinshu University from Nagano, on the bases of the Memorandum for collaboration signed between the two Universities. Multiple collaborative publications, conference presentations and staff/student exchanges have been realized. Distinguished professor  dr Katsumi Kaneko and prof.dr Yoshiyuki Hattori from Shinshu University are working in carbon sciences for decades, with professor Kaneko one of the world’s most highly cited experts in this area. However, there is also a very inspirational story on collaboration with the expert from diaspora, Prof.dr Dušan Lošić of Adelaide University. Namely, professor have actually started his carrier as very young expert about 30 years ago exactly in the “Destilacija company. He is now one of the worlds most renewed experts in carbon science. The advices and the highly sophisticated analysis with which these support partners will strengthen the RediNano project, will be of the crucial importance for the success of the research and the development of the new technology.
